Singapore is second only to the United States in having the highest incidence of diabetes among developed nations. 1 in 9 Singaporeans has diabetes and this is a very serious issue for our nation as announced by our Prime Minister last year.
Every major race in Singapore is affected by the disease with 2.5 in 10 for the Chinese, 5 in 10 for the Malays and 6 in 10 for the Indians. One in three has a lifetime risk of developing the disease. Diabetes can lead to many serious health complications like blindness, heart failure and kidney failure. An average of about 1,200 diabetics undergoes amputation every year in Singapore.
Join this online walk challenge to support our nation war against diabetic and to fight this health crisis together. Go for regular medical checkups and eat healthier.
The easiest way to exercise more is to walk a little bit more every day and incorporate it into our daily routine. Commence on World Diabetes Day (14 November) and last for two weeks, this online challenge raise awareness of diabetes and promote the importance of regular exercise to help prevent type 2 diabetes and manage all types of diabetes today.
And if nothing is done, the number of diabetics under age 70 is expected to rise to 670,000 by 2030 and one million by 2050. Diabetes can be prevented. Exercise and lifestyle changes help both diabetics and pre-diabetics. Let’s walk together against diabetes.
To prevent overexertion, the number of hours should be distributed across at least three days a week. Diabetics should consult their doctors before deciding on a suitable exercise programme. All diabetics should wear comfortable shoes to exercise.
