Renowned as Asia’s largest night marathon, the Sundown Marathon will celebrate its 10th year anniversary in 2017 by venturing into Penang and Taipei – in line with its plans to go regional.

The first ever Malaysia Sundown night run will be held on 17 December 2016, in the heart of Bayan Lepas at Queensbay Mall, Penang. It aims to attract 5,000 runners.

The Spark For Penang

Since its humble beginnings as Singapore’s first night run in 2008, the annual race has seen a stable increase in participation over the years. The 9th edition of the race in 2016 saw 27,500 runners taking on the challenge of night racing – a 500% increase from its debut in 2008 (6,000 runners). The 2016 race featured more than 40% of overseas running enthusiasts from countries such as Malaysia, Taiwan, Philippines and China.

Adrian Mok, Managing Director of HiVelocity Events, the organiser of Sundown Marathon said,

“We have been planning to go regional for quite some time, and with Sundown celebrating its 10th year, it is timely for us to go abroad to reach out to more people in different countries. The Singapore edition has attracted a significant number of foreigners, an indicator of the popularity of the race. Specifically, 20% of our overseas runners fly in from Malaysia to run in Sundown Marathon Singapore. We are aware that Penang has a very large running community and are excited to bring the race there to allow more Malaysians to experience the magic of night racing. We’re also grateful to OSIM for lending their continuous support, as this marks a major milestone for Sundown.”

The OSIM Sundown Marathon Penang portrays the strong partnership forged between OSIM and Sundown Marathon, which combines OSIM’s mission of inspiring well-being with the Sundown Marathon’s aim of creating an all-inclusive fun and healthy environment for families and friends to enjoy as they run through the night.

Mr Ron Sim, Founder, Chairman and CEO of OSIM International Pte Ltd said,

“The spirit of the marathoner resonates with OSIM because we believe in challenging your spirit to do your best. The OSIM Sundown Marathon 2017 is particularly exciting as it will be running in Penang and Taipei. It makes our partnership more significant as Malaysia and Taiwan are two of the key countries where OSIM is present. This shows the entrepreneurial drive of the organisers in growing the sport and as a Singapore brand who has gone before, we are happy to help promote Sundown to these new markets.”
