On a sleepy Sunday morning when most of the population were still in bed, approximately 7000 runners made their way down to The Promontory@Marina Bay to participate in the Pocari Sweat Run 2013. The starting point of the run which is in its second year was different from last year’s inaugural run which commenced at the Gardens by the Bay. Traffic flow was seamless and security checks went by without a hitch ensuring a safe environment for all.

At flag off, the buzz was contagious as the human sea of runners clad in their blue race tops were eagerly anticipating the gun to sound. From serious to recreational runners, everyone was in high spirits which even the recent hazy weather could not dampen. Adrenaline was kept alive and kicking with upbeat music and the MCs lively banter entertained the crowd while they waited to be released in multiple waves that were planned to prevent congestion and ensure that everyone would have ample space.

Route wise for the 10km, it was a tad challenging towards the 4km mark where an uphill slope on the roundabout at the Marina Barrage tested the mettle of the runners. While some chose to walk, many had a look of determination as they decided to keep on going. Once conquered, the route continued towards the familiar Gardens by the East before looping back to the same slope that once again challenged many. Defeating the slope for the second time was a relief as the finish line was only 2km away with volunteers shouting words of encouragement to keep them going.

Throughout the race, water points were strategically well placed to ensure that runners would be hydrated with a refreshing supply of Pocari Sweat and water. Dispensed by enthusiastic volunteers dressed in apron, gloves and masks, this was consistent with the high hygienic standards that Otsuka, Pocari Sweat’s parent company is known for.

Having the crowd cheer the runners at the last 200m was indeed helpful as many were spurred on and sprinted their way home where a bottle of Pocari Sweat and a finisher’s medal awaited everyone that completed the run. Taking top honours were Patrick Coles and Vanja Chops for the men’s and women’s 10km in a time of 36m 08s and 41m 34 sec respectively. Foo Gen Lin won the men’s 5km in 18m 17s while Tan Yin Lin won the women’s 5Km in 23m 11s.

After the run, there was no rush to leave as most of the crowd lingered on to take photos, warm down and waited for friends that had yet to complete the race. A discussion panel on topics such as hydration, nutrition, training, injury and rehab points were addressed by Mok Ying Ren, Singapore’s top distance athlete, Dr Jason Chua, Consultant Sports Physician, Derrick Ong, accredited practising dietician and director of Eat Right Pte Ltd and Alan Tay, Fitness First personal trainer with more than 21 years of experience who shared their first hand experiences and wealth of knowledge with the appreciative crowd.

At the end of the session, the faces of the runners said it all; it was certainly a Sunday morning well spent outdoors.
