Close your eyes for a moment and imagine the raw energy of Singapore in 1966. In the immediate aftermath of independence, a young nation, vulnerable yet defiant, took its first collective breath and articulated a profound promise. It was more than a sequence of words; it was a rigorous blueprint for a shared future.
“We, the citizens of Singapore…” Fast forward to today. We stand on the shoulders of giants, a vibrant testament to grit, unity, and an unwavering belief in happiness, prosperity, and progress. But how do we, the current custodians of this promise, truly honour the journey that brought us here? How do we connect with the values that define us, not just intellectually, but physically and spiritually?
Welcome to the We The Citizens Singapore Challenge 2026, a deeply inspiring, resource-rich virtual pilgrimage celebrating the 60th Anniversary of our cherished National Pledge. Built on our shared promise, this is a movement of unity, designed to let every citizen resonate with the history, trivia, and enduring spirit of our beloved Singapore.
🧠 Trivia Fact: The “Birthday” of Our Promise
You might know the words by heart, but do you know the exact birthday of the Pledge? The finalised Singapore National Pledge was recited for the very first time on 24 August 1966. On that historic morning, a staggering 500,000 students across 529 schools stood before the national flag to make this new promise together.
This means the exact 60th Anniversary—our ultimate “Pledge Day”—falls on 24 August 2026. (Pro-Tip for Runners: Mark this date in your calendar right now. It is the absolute perfect day to log your final kilometres, unlock the final badge, and complete your challenge!)

The Heart of the Challenge: Celebrating Our National Pledge (1966–2026)
Why are we gathering, virtually, to run 60 kilometres? We are celebrating the diamond jubilee of the Singapore National Pledge.
A Historical Insignt: The Story Behind the Promise
The Singapore National Pledge was not written simply as a routine for schools. It was born from a pivotal moment. In the tense environment following racial riots in 1964 and the sudden separation from Malaysia in 1965, Singapore’s leaders understood the critical need for a unifying text.
Did You Know?
The very first ideas for the Pledge were proposed in 1966 by then-Minister for Culture, S. Rajaratnam, while reflecting on the urgent need for multiracial cohesion in a new country.
When you join this challenge, you aren’t just logging distance; you are retracing the emotional and physical geography of that promise.
A Historical Gem: The original drafts were debated fiercely, ensuring that the text resonated with all Singaporeans. The powerful line “…regardless of race, language or religion…” became the cornerstone, setting Singapore on a unique path of inclusive multiculturalism that remains a source of immense pride today.
The Benefits: Why “Clock 60KM for the 60th Anniversary”?
This challenge is designed for every citizen, resident, and friend of Singapore. It is built on the philosophy that true commemoration must be inclusive, flexible, and accessible.
