If you are looking to push yourself physically, signing up to run a race is a great way to do it. Whether it’s a full marathon, an obstacle course, or any other type of event, you will have to prepare for a race with a variety of changes.

You’ll need to ensure that your diet is right, your body is rested and you also need the right gears to run in. If you are planning to hit the open road this summer and begin training, here are some things that you need to know before you sign up for a race.

What’s Your Schedule?

Taking part in a race is hard work and it’s going to require that you stay dedicated to your training as much as possible. Running 42km is no easy task, so it’s important that your marathon preparation is taken seriously. That means you have to set aside some time in your schedule to train.

That being said, working 40 hours a week and maintaining a personal life are also both big time commitments. Before you decide to run a race, it’s imperative that you consider your schedule. One great way to work around your schedule is get your friends or family involved. Whether it’s joining the race, coming along as a spectator, or simply helping you prepare breakfast on race day, having your loved ones give you some moral support is always appreciated.

Not only will this allow for you to spend time with people from your personal life, but it’ll also help you stay motivated while you are race training and preparing for your running event.

Choose The Type of Race

Some people simply do not enjoy running for extended lengths, while others can’t imagine the idea of doing anything less than a full marathon. There is no right or wrong style, but it’s important that you know yours. Running a marathon can be equally as tough mentally as it is physically.

Are you prepared to take on both of these challenges? Training for an off-road course will require that you are ready to get dirty in mud and other obstacles, which some people may not enjoy. If you can determine what your style is, then you can find the trigger point that motivates you to get started with your race training.

What’s Your Goal?

Before you decide anything else, you should determine what your end goal is and what you want to accomplish during your race training.

Are you someone who wants to run a marathon so you can add it to your bucket list? Do you want to take part in an off-road obstacle course with your friends? Or do you simply want to start out with a novice course as you learn more about running?

Whatever the case may be, it’s important that you establish this in the beginning. Knowing this will help you tailor how you should be training and what the necessary steps are for success. Having a goal will also keep you motivated with a time schedule, so that you don’t end up being far behind on your overall training.

What Type Of Runner Are You?

Saying that you want to run a marathon is one thing. Actually doing it, that’s something else completely. The truth of the matter is that some people are simply better built to be long-distance runners and others are not.

That does not mean that you cannot work your way to that level, with proper marathon training but it’s going to take some work and effort to achieve those goals. If you are a beginner, you may be better of starting with a half marathon or even an 18km. If you are doing something that you do not enjoy, it’s going to be much more difficult to stay motivated to do it. Therefore, find something you love as you set your running goal and work towards it.

What’s On Your Feet?

A good pair of shoes can be a runner’s best friend. The shoes that you have on your feet need to be comfortable so that you don’t start to feel pain as you are running. If you are training for a race and notice that your feet hurt, you certainly won’t want to wear the same shoes during an actual race.

Be sure to test out a variety of different pairs of shoes to ensure that you have the ones that are best for you and your running goal. When it comes to looking for a good pair of running shoes, comfort should be your first priority. But it doesn’t hurt to find a design that appeals to you too. After all, the style of your shoes might just motivate you when you are out there running against other people.

With a variety of options to choose from, you are sure to find something you like. But if you think that you can start training with your old gym shoes, you certainly want to think again.

You’ve Got What it Takes!

Before you get started, think about these considerations as you sign up for your first race.

Running a race will push you physically and mentally. But in the end, you will be pleased with your efforts and accomplishments.
