Starting back in the early 1990s, the Brighton Half Marathon was initially organized by a small group of individuals. The first event’s proceeds helped fund the building of The Sussex Beacon, a local charity which remains integral to the marathon’s organization.

Today, the event stands as the biggest annual fundraiser for this charity, supporting its specialist HIV care center in Brighton​.
