The Malaysia Marathon 2017, scheduled on 1 October 2017 at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur was suddenly cancelled just weeks before the race.

Many registered participants were in dismayed by the last minute decision with some even criticising this event as a moneymaking scheme. Others have questioned the credibility of using “Malaysia Marathon” as the event name which may affect international runners visiting the nation.

A statement released on the official event website by the organiser of Malaysia Marathon 2017 stated,

It is with deep regret that we announce the cancellation of Malaysia Marathon 2017 scheduled on 1st October 2017 at Dataran Merdeka. The cancellation is due to unforeseen circumstances which would have impacted the overall event quality.

It was a truly difficult decision to make and we sincerely apologise to all those who have registered for the event.

All registered runners will be receiving a full refund of their participation fee and race kit delivery fee. We are targeting to complete the refund process within 30 working days. For payment made by Credit Card/Paypal/Alipay, the refund amount will be credited back to your account. For payment made through online banking, an email will be sent to you on the refund process.

Should you not receive a refund by 15th October 2017, please drop us an email at info@malaysia-marathon.com.

We wish to thank each and every participant who have supported us right from the start and greatly appreciate your patience and understanding.

From,
The Organiser of Malaysia Marathon 2017
Wisdom Sports (M) Sdn Bhd

Runners who have signed up for the race called the organiser “irresponsible” for not sending any email update explaining to them the real reason of the cancellation.

The official event website indicates that Wisdom Sports Malaysia, Ministry of Tourism & Culture (MOTAC), Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) are the organisers of this marathon event, with the support from Tourism Malaysia.

The marathon has three categories — a 42km full marathon, a 21km half marathon, and a 10km run with registrations fees ranged from RM95 to RM120 per participants, and early-bird promotions priced from RM70 to RM90.

The organiser did not reply to queries, or could not be reached for response.
