Running while wearing a mask is not required in our everyday life, but face masks have become a part of our lives, and we must wear them anytime and anywhere when we are out in public.

Since then, it has changed our running routine. But a question that is always unclear is whether we should wear masks when we are running.

With that being said, let’s keep reading about the type of mask we should wear and should we wear a mask while running.

Why is it crucial to wear a mask while running? The reason is to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

By wearing a mask, it acts as a barrier to prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air (which go airborne) and onto other people when you sneeze, talk or cough.

It helps you to run safely. If you do not wear a mask, then you might have the possibly endanger others and yourself as well.

Take into consideration where you run

Whether you wear a mask or not depends on where you are running, and, at the same time, you should comply with your state and country’s standard operating procedure.

If you are running alone in your neighbourhood, it is likely you don’t need to wear a face mask. To lower the risk of transmission, it is best to avoid running around crowded areas or public spaces as much as possible. When you are running outside, always be mindful to practise social distancing and wash your hands often.

In such scenarios, if you were to surround people in a public area or do other outdoor activities, wearing a mask and avoid getting close when passing can help to minimise the risk of transmission.

How will a face mask affect your running routine?

Wearing a face mask might make it a little harder to breathe. You might feel fatigued quicker than you normally do. As a result, it is possible to affect your overall performance level. Due to these reasons, you might need to make a few adjustments for your run.

What you can do is monitor if you are having any unusual symptoms like dizziness, difficulty in breathing, or chest pain.

If you experience any symptoms, stop your run and take a rest. Take it slow and let your body adapt to the face covering while running.

What type of mask should you use when running?

Now, you must be wondering what type of masks you should use for running. You may consider wearing a surgical face mask if you do not wish to buy any workout face masks.

But if you are looking for a face mask option for running, look for moisture-wicking fabric, the mask should fit your face and cover your nose and chin. Be mindful to look for face masks that are not too thick or make the mask feel restrictive. After each run, you should clean your mask by washing it.

In conclusion, it is best to prepare or wear a face mask to minimise the spread of COVID-19, as well as protecting yourself and others.

Feel free to write to us and share your opinion about whether we should wear a face mask when running.
