IRONMAN has announced that Langkawi will continue to host IRONMAN Malaysia this year, with an additional race: IRONMAN 70.3 Langkawi. Both races will take place on 11 November 2017. Athlete check-in is scheduled to start from 8 November 2017.

With the introduction of IRONMAN 70.3 in Langkawi this year, IRONMAN 70.3 Putrajaya will be discontinued in 2017.

Geoff Meyer, Asia Managing Director for IRONMAN, said,

We are truly happy about this announcement as IRONMAN Malaysia has become a staple on the Asian triathlon calendar for the past few years. We have received strong support from participants and the local community, and are extremely excited to welcome more athletes to such an amazing destination with the addition of IRONMAN 70.3 Langkawi.

The return of IRONMAN to Langkawi is supported by Malaysia Major Events, a division of Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) which is an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia. General Manager of Malaysia Major Events, Tony Nagamaiah, said,

We are truly excited to host IRONMAN Malaysia once again in one of Malaysia’s hidden gems, Langkawi. The annual race has proven to be one of the most successful major events that we have been hosting in Malaysia. By collaborating with IRONMAN again this year, we are confident that this year’s race will be another success.

The Course

IRONMAN Malaysia athletes will begin with a 3.8km swim at The Danna Langkawi, embracing Pantai Kok’s pristine beach and crystal blue water. The swim course consists of two triangle loops of 1.9km.

For the 180km bike portion, IRONMAN Malaysia athletes will tackle two loops of the bike course, which starts from The Danna Langkawi towards Northwest point of the island (Datai), then continues on a clockwise loop to the Southeast part of Langkawi, passing through several local villages. At the end of the second loop, athletes will continue along the coastline of Pantai Kok and head to the Mahsuri International Exhibition Center (MIEC) for the transition.

Eventually, from MIEC, athletes will run along the side of Langkawi International Airport runway and the scenic ocean front of Cenang Beach on the flat run course for approximately 2.5 loops. The finish line of the 42.2km run is at the beach front of Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa.

IRONMAN 70.3 athletes will race the same course as the full IRONMAN Malaysia, but will only cover half the distance.
