The fight against cancer is a long and arduous battle. Cancer patients, survivors and caregivers don’t stop fighting when they’re tired. It’s an ongoing battle that is happening 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The SCS-TalkMed Relay For Life 2018 is an opportunity for us to declare the war against cancer alongside cancer patients whose battle still continue, to test our mental fortitude against the hardships faced by cancer warriors, to celebrate the lives of those who have survived and to remember loved ones lost.

What is Relay For Life?

Founded in May 1985 by American Cancer Society, Relay For Life (RFL) is a movement that has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising about $5 billion to fight cancer. Every year, almost 4 million participants take part in RFL across the globe, making it one of the world’s largest fundraiser event.

Singapore is the 25th member country to organise RFL. This year, the relay will take place at National Stadium, Singapore Sports Hub, from 10 to 11 March 2018, 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. the next day. The 15-hour overnight relay signifies the ongoing battle against cancer that never sleeps until the cure for cancer is found.

How does SCS-TalkMed Relay For Life 2018 Work?

To participate in SCS-TalkMed Relay For Life, you can sign up as an individual or a team (minimum 2 members). Participants can join RFL at any of the 3 segments, or multiple segments of the event.

  • Celebrate: 6.00pm – 9.00pm (10 March 2018)
  • Remember: 9.00pm – 6.00am (10 – 11 March 2018)
  • Fight Back: 6.00am – 9.00am (11 March 2018)

In addition, participants can also take part in the 100KM Challenge. If you sign up as an individual challenger, you are required to be on the relay track throughout the 15-hour overnight event while running/walking with a baton. Up to 3 meal breaks of 45 minutes each and indefinite number of toilet breaks of 15 minutes each are allowed.

If you sign up as a team in the Team 100KM Challenge, your team is required to have at least a member on the relay track at all times, with a baton, throughout the 15-hour event.

At the end of the 15 hours event, each team challenger or individual challenger that is present on the Relay track with the baton will be deemed as having completed the 100KM Challenge and stand to receive an exclusive 100KM Finisher’s tee!

Special moments you don’t want to miss

Through SCS-TalkMed Relay For Life 2018, Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) aims to rally the local community to come together to celebrate, remember and fight back. These special moments that signify Relay For Life’s missions are what you don’t want to miss.

Celebrate (Survivors Lap). All cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while being cheered on by the other participants who line up on the track.

Remember (Luminaria). To honour the people who have fought cancer in the past and to support those who are still fighting, candles will be lit inside personalised bags and placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes.

Fight Back Ceremony. This emotionally powerful ceremony symbolizes the emotional commitment that we all make to fight against cancer and save lives.

Will my participation make a difference?

No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted (Aesop)

By joining this fight, you are helping the advancement of cancer research, advocating early cancer detection, supporting cancer patients financially and emotionally, minimising cancer and maximising life. It only takes S$25 donation to join the event. It’s an amount most people can afford by skipping one or two restaurant meals. Yet, your support will go a long way in this gruelling fight against cancer.

Show your support, rally your family members and friends to join this meaningful event, SCS-TalkMed Relay For Life 2018.
